The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued the following warning letters to consumers last week about the possibility of over-the-counter (OTC) prescription hair loss medication Propecia (finasteride).
The FDA letter was sent to Merck (manufacturer of Propecia) and Schering-Plough (manufacturer of Proscar) in the United States to advise consumers that “propecia and other over-the-counter hair loss products are not safe and will not provide effective results.” It also said that consumers “should be aware that there may be a slight increased risk of certain types of hair loss in women who are pregnant, have a family history of male pattern baldness, or are planning to become pregnant or are trying to get pregnant.”
The FDA letter also warned that patients who have taken Propecia for more than 12 months could experience a sudden and potentially serious decrease in vision while taking the drug. Propecia has not been shown to be safe or effective for hair loss treatment for women.
FDA letterer and drug manufacturer Merck (manufacturer of Propecia and Proscar) also said they are reviewing the letter and will notify consumers if they believe the product is unsafe or ineffective for their health.
“Given the potential for serious side effects associated with finasteride and Propecia, the FDA’s letter provides consumers with information and advice as to the safety, efficacy, and potential risks associated with these drugs and potential side effects,” the FDA letter stated in a press release. “We are also reviewing the safety and efficacy data from several other products, including those with the potential to increase the risk of a rare, potentially fatal but potentially serious but very rare skin condition called telogen effluvium.”
Propecia and its generic equivalent, finasteride, are both FDA-approved and highly effective hair loss treatments. The drug is sold under the brand name Propecia. Propecia is a prescription-only medication that was originally developed to treat enlarged prostates and male pattern baldness. Merck sold Propecia for about $8.9 billion in the U. S. in 2012, after the patent expired. The company has since been re-branded to Proscar.
In June 2011, Merck issued a warning letter to consumers about a potential link between the use of Propecia and the development of prostate cancer. The FDA’s letter stated that “propecia and finasteride have been shown to be effective and safe for the treatment of male pattern hair loss.”
The FDA letter also said that the FDA has not yet made any statements as to the effects of finasteride on hair growth in animals, including rats.
In April 2011, Merck issued a similar warning letter to consumers. The letter stated that “the FDA has not shown that finasteride, or any other hair loss product containing finasteride, is safe and effective for the treatment of male pattern hair loss.”
According to the letter, “The FDA’s letter to consumers was the first FDA letter to alert consumers about the potential risks associated with Propecia and the possibility that finasteride could lead to the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).”
The letter was sent to about 1,800 patients in Canada who have been diagnosed with hair loss from the use of Propecia and finasteride. Patients were given a 30-day supply of Propecia, finasteride, and either a placebo or finasteride (dutasteride) pill and asked to complete a questionnaire, which was completed by 1,500 people.
The patient questionnaire was completed by 3,500 patients who had been diagnosed with hair loss for at least one year.
The patient questionnaire also was completed by 1,000 men who had used Propecia or finasteride for more than 12 months and who had at least one year of use of these hair loss medications. In addition to the questionnaire, the patient was also asked to complete a questionnaire about their hair loss and other health problems.
In a letter to the FDA in June 2011, Merck issued a letter to consumers warning that “the FDA’s warning letters are misleading to consumers” and that the company has “no evidence of safe or effective hair loss treatment products.”
Merck posted the following statement to its website: “Propecia and finasteride are two of the most popular prescription hair loss products on the market.
Take Finax 1mg Tablet as advised by your doctor. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine.
Take one tablet daily, preferably at the same time each day. Follow your doctor's instructions and do not exceed the recommended dosage.
If you miss a dose of Finax 1mg, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it’s close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed tablet. Consistent daily use is essential for optimal results in managing hair loss. Always consult your doctor for specific advice regarding missed doses.
Long-term use of Finax tablets may cause potential side effects, such as decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, or depression, may persist or appear over time.
Regular follow-ups with a doctor are essential to monitor your health and assess continued suitability.
Long-term benefits, like sustained hair regrowth and reduced hair loss, can be seen with consistent use, but stopping the medication may reverse results.
